Facebook’s company renaming as Meta is less a rebranding than the creation of a new holding company called Meta to house a collection of important, possibly misunderstood, and sometimes misbehaving brands.

  • There’s the reality-challenged Oculus
  • The global communicator WhatsApp
  • The always seeking influence and slightly self-centered Instagram
  • And the problem child Facebook

Meta is something new. A big brand with its eyes not on being extra-meta but on being the new North Star for the Metaverse, an Oasis-style (please read Ready Player One) omni-digital platform that will ultimately encompass all of Meta’s products and services.

TLDR: Facebook, Inc. is now Meta, a social technology company consumed with building The Metaverse in our (or Mark Zuckerberg’s) lifetime.

One might see this as a lot of hand-waving to try and distract from the myriad issues Facebook (the social platform that still very much exists) now faces. The Facebook Papers (which are really screengrabs of studies and in-house corporate message board conversations) have blown the company’s somewhat secret machinations wide open.
