Video games have taken off during the pandemic, but it’s proven to be an Achilles’ heel for the e-commerce giant. A new Bloomberg investigative story, based on interviews with more than 30 current and former employees, offers some clues behind Amazon’s multiple failures in its foray into the gaming industry. “Successful video games are a combination of art, entertainment, technology and very large budgets,” report Jason Schreier and Priya Anand. “Big tech companies only really figured out the last two.” It’s a humbling moment for a company that has otherwise swallowed up retail, cloud computing, and shipping.
