Dear Reader,

I want to call your attention to a feature we just posted on Marker: “Tesla’s Cybertruck Has a Huge Cowboy Problem.”

Writer David H. Freedman asks an important question about Elon Musk’s electric car company: Can their polygonal, futuristic truck really compete with Ford, Dodge, and Chevrolet’s near-total lockdown of the American pickup market?

It’s one thing for Tesla to hurl steel balls at shatterproof window on a stage in Los Angeles. It’s a whole other for Musk to successfully raid rural America and convince ranchers, contractors, weekend warriors, and yes, cowboys that the Cybertruck will get the job done. (They also need to do something about actually making those windows shatterproof.)

As Freedman chronicles, Tesla’s got competition coming from all sides — from legacy carmakers developing electrics, to Rivian, the leader of a pack of startups focusing on e-trucks. And all this is happening as their stock undergoes one of the biggest pops in recent memory. It’s a fascinating story looking at how a mature startup expands into new markets. Give it a read here.

I also wanted to take a quick moment to spotlight Marker’s growing network of columnists and contributors, drawn from across the world of business and management. We’ve had Nilofer Merchant advise on whether you should take the big job offer with the fancy new title, Sam Altman explain how he chooses which startups to invest in, Jerry Colonna on the B.S. of work-life balance, Kara Goldin share why she ran a Super Bowl ad for her startup, and many more. We will keep growing the number of expert and operator voices that we bring to you, and you can always go to our homepage, marker.medium.com, to see what we’ve got cooking each day.

Thank you for being a reader and as always, email me if there’s anything you’d like to see us do, or do better.

Be well,
