Dear Reader,

Thank you for being a follower of Marker here on Medium. Since we launched last September, we’ve published hundreds of articles — features, profiles, guides, columns, and advice — aimed at helping you become better at what you do every day.

In my decade-plus career as a journalist, Medium is the first company where my reader is also my customer. Because of our ad-free reading experience, we’re not forced to create content to satisfy advertising campaigns running on the site. We don’t have to sell you to anyone.

What we do have to do is sell you, our audience, on us. We want you to become a paying member of Medium to support our journalism, and because you find what we do so valuable that you’re willing to whip out a credit card to read more of it. (If the spirit moves you right now, click here!)

We intend to do that by publishing high-quality stories you won’t find anywhere else. Deeply reported features on companies and trailblazers in business, valuable insights from your fellow founders, entrepreneurs, and venture capitalists, and in-depth, nerdy analysis from writers who are passionate about their work, just like you.

I’ll be sending out a weekly note like this one about what we’re up to at Marker, pointing some of our most interesting stories that we think you need to read.

This week’s great read

Today, we published one of the deepest looks at e-scooter company Lime that you’ll find anywhere, by author, entrepreneur, and professor Jonathan Littman: Lime Wants a Revolution.

Starting here in San Francisco, Jon checks in on the state of Lime’s business — they won the e-scooter wars, but like so many unicorns, are still struggling to turn a profit. How does their vision of dominating micromobility square up with their recent layoffs and pullback from several cities around the globe? What can they do when vandals dump hundreds of their scooters into the sea, as the did in France? In short, are cities and people ready for Lime’s vision of the future? Let us be your guide in finding out.

Thanks for being a reader, and if you aren’t already, we hope you’ll be a member too. Finally, please feel free to email me at any time if there’s a story you want to see on Marker, or if you have any feedback about how we’re doing: paul@medium.com.

Be well,

Paul Smalera
